SLS Mottos of 2023
February 1, 2023
With a new year come new mindsets. So what quotes and sayings are St. Luke’s students keeping at the forefront of their minds this year?
In compiling answers from dozens of people, some big themes stand out: living in the moment, self-care, motivating yourself and others, looking on the bright side, and some fun extras!
Live in the Moment:
It’s easy to get caught up in everything you have going on and miss the world around you. As the iconic character Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” What does SLS have to say about this?
Ethan Crawford ‘23: “Don’t look at your feet to see if you’re doing it right. Just dance.”
Gage Saresky ‘26: “I’m only here for a good time, not a long time.”
Jack Silverman ‘23: “We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.” – Marilyn Monroe
Gordie Stuart ‘23: “I try to live in the moment because someday I’ll think of high school as the good old times.”
George Foster ‘23: “Eventually it will end.” Not in a sad way, but like I don’t get to be here forever, so I have to appreciate it while I have it.
Charlie Lewis ‘23: “This life is short and fragile; this night has got to rattle.”
Catherine Steele ‘23: “You only live once, so make the most of it!”
Caleb Seiden ‘23: “I want to live this year with no regrets and be able to look back on my high school years with fulfillment.”
Stay Motivated:
We all struggle to stay motivated, whether: in our schoolwork or on sports teams. But our student body has some tips for you to get you moving!
Mackenzie Nelson ‘23: “Get 1% better every day in everything you do.”
Aidan Panian ‘23: “When it feels scary to jump, that’s exactly when you jump. Otherwise, you end up staying in the same place your whole life. And that I can’t do.”
Tripp Beasley ‘25: “Until you start believing in yourself, ya ain’t gonna have a life.” – Rocky Balboa
Sally Picon ‘24: “Dreams don’t work unless you do.”
Grady Millones ‘25: “Work hard, play hard.”- Wiz Khalifa
Grace Wearing ‘23: “Yesterday, you said tomorrow.”
Sam Stevelman ‘23: “Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan
Marissa Kramer ‘23: “Work smarter, not harder.”
MJ Owens ‘24: “Fake it till you make it.” I feel like that is so important for confidence in anything you do; just act like you know what you’re doing, and you’ll feel so much more comfortable.
Grant Douglas ‘23: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi
Self Care:
While wanting everything to be perfect, both in and out of school, we often neglect our own health. But it’s important to prioritize yourself as well, and St. Luke’s students have some comforting quotes to remind you to go easy on yourself.
Sofia Shklovsky ‘23: In “it’s time to go” on evermore, Taylor [Swift] says, “Sometimes giving up is the strong thing, sometimes to run is the brave thing, sometimes walking out is the one thing that can find you the right thing.” I wanna live by the idea that if a situation is not doing you any good, sometimes it’s best to move forward instead of getting caught up in the cycle.
Hannah Johnson ‘24: “It’s okay to not be okay.”
Michael Yeboah ‘25: “Just be the best version of yourself no matter what you do.”
Sam Thomas ‘26: “Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” – Professor X
Laura Haley ‘23: “I think one thing I’m really trying to live by is taking time for myself and making sure I’m balancing work and fun.”
Emma Sherter ‘25: “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world.”
The Bright Side:
Good things happen, and bad things happen. Here are some quotes to encourage you to look on the bright side of any situation. You might see a quote repeated–It’s important!
Justin Higgins ‘23: [There’s a] clip of Trevor Lawrence talking about “Good” after [the Jaguars] beat the Chargers… Basically, the principle of it is that no matter what situation you’re in, the response is always “good.” Meaning… just keep looking forward ,and if you made a mistake, it’s “good” because you have the chance to correct or redeem yourself from it… For context, Trevor Lawerence [said that after] he threw 4 picks in the first half against the Chargers, and then came back in the second half and led them to victory.
Maya Coniglio ‘24: “Everything happens for a reason.”
Izzy Dore ‘23: “If it’s meant to be, it will happen.”
Thomas Durvasula ‘23: “Relax to win.”
Peyton Ambrose ‘25: “Everything happens for a reason.”
Eoin Mueller ‘23: “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” – Maya Angelou
Miscellaneous:
Sometimes, there is something we need to hear, and we don’t know what it is. So here are a few more quotes to keep you going!
Henry Stimpson ‘25: – “F.A.M.I.L.Y – Forget about me. I love you.” – Coach Thomas
Dean Ambrose ‘23: “You got to put the worm on the hook; that’s the most important part.” – Eavesdropping on some random guy
