In recognition of Memorial Day, on May 27, my club “Commitment to Service” placed a series of small American flags on the grass between the AC and Be Kind Plaza. Our goal was to remind the SLS community about the meaning of this day, which began as a U.S. Army tradition in 1868 and was made a national holiday in 1971.
While we all considered Monday a welcome break from work or school, we urge you to remember the true meaning of the day: to honor the ultimate sacrifice made by Americans killed in service to their country. As you reflect, consider just one example close to home: a young man from New Canaan, Andrew Lind, was killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War. So whenever you see flags on campus or around town, consider the sacrifice made by Mr. Lind and the millions of others like him who help to secure our country’s freedoms through their commitment to service.
