An Introduction to SLS’ New Club: Americares
September 26, 2018
As St. Luke’s students return to the Hilltop for the outset of the 2018-2019 school year, there are many new opportunities for us to explore. Since attention has been focused on the new wing and especially the Cafe, new clubs that offer several different ways to advance and educate our community have flown under the radar.
The introduction of the Americares Club at St. Luke’s further augments the wide variety of clubs that the school community has to offer. Americares, led by Jackson McManus ‘20, aims to “raise money and gather supplies for relief efforts.” When asked why he chose to bring the club to the Hilltop, Jackson commented that he “started to get interested in ways to help people suffering with natural disasters” because of a service trip he will be taking to Puerto Rico this October. Curious and hoping to expand his knowledge, he “began to look into Americares,” which its website describes as a “health-focused relief and development organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-changing medicine, medical supplies and health programs.” Americares provides aid in over 90 countries, saving lives by restoring both health and hope.
Jackson’s plans for the club include several “fundraisers and supply gatherings to raise money;” whether it be from bake sales, food drives, or clothing drives, Jackson is determined to raise money for the organization. If you are interested in becoming a member of Americares at SLS, send Jackson an email ([email protected]) or stop him in the hallways, and he will be more than happy to sign you up. Support for his new club is needed and anyone can help. He “strongly [encourages] that you sign up if you want to make a difference,” and is planning on club meetings every other Tuesday.
