There is a lot of hidden talent among students at St. Luke’s. Will Thomas ‘21 is an aspiring sports journalist with dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster. Rather than waiting to become an adult to get involved in sports journalism, he created his own website two years ago called Swamp News, where he writes about the Florida Gators. Specifically, he produces weekly updates on Gator football and basketball.

Will has always loved the Florida Gators and has orange and blue in his veins. He goes to as many Florida football and basketball games as he can. The experience of being on campus always inspires him to write. In October, College Gameday was hosted at UF for the Florida vs Auburn game, and the moment he stepped into view of Gameday, he said “I was excited and it was cool to see it live. I really knew I wanted to do [sports broadcasting].”

One way his writing has improved is through the University of Florida’s Summer Media Institute (SMI), described on their site as “a five-night, six-day workshop in which high school students are immersed in journalism and communications.”

At SMI, Will focused on sports reporting. He said, “For five hours each day, our group made short videos, highlight reels – basically stuff you would do as a sports reporter.” This experience helped solidify the fact that this is what he wants to do with his life. Writing about sports is a dream come true for Will. Who knows? You may see him on College Gameday in the future! In the meantime, check out his latest articles on Swamp News.
