On February 1st, 2026 in Melbourne, Australia, Carlos Alcaraz won a historic Australian Open, beating Novak Djokovic and completing his career Grand Slam, only the ninth man to do so.
The career Grand Slam is when a tennis player wins each of the four major tennis championships. At 22 years old, Alcaraz is the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.
This final carried major importance for Djokovic; it marked his eleventh Australian Open final, having won all ten of his previous appearances. At 38, he also had the chance to be the oldest man to ever win a Grand Slam tournament. With 24 major titles, Djokovic is currently tied with Margaret Court for the most ever. A win at this year’s Australian Open would have secured the record outright.
Alcaraz’s victory turns a new leaf in the history of tennis. Djokovic is the last left of the “big three,” completed by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. From 2003-2024, the trio dominated tennis, winning a combined 66 major championships. Together, the three ranked No. 1 in the world for a combined 947 weeks and ended the year ranked No. 1 every year from 2004 to 2023, excluding 2016 and 2022.
Federer and Nadal have since retired, and Djokovic, too, is getting old, which creates an opening for a new generation of players.
Enter Carlos Alcaraz. The 22-year old from Spain, known for his exceptional talent and speed, makes any shot look easy and gets to balls no other players can. His semifinal match against Alexander Zverev lasted 5 ½ hours, with Alcaraz outlasting the 28-year old German after five sets.
Alcaraz showed his true grit, saying, “physically, it was one of the most demanding matches I have ever played in my career. I had to put my whole heart into the match.” And he continued to put his whole heart into the rest of the tournament, though Alcaraz’s final match only took three hours and four sets to claim the title.
Alcaraz’s victory is so significant for tennis as it shows a new era of youth and speed beginning to take over the sport. Djokovic called the results of the match, “a testament to his already stellar career,” and said Alcaraz, “definitely is one of the best players I’ve faced in my career.” Djokovic has long reigned as one of tennis’s greats, but this final showed that the consistency of an aging legend was no match for Alcaraz’s explosive athleticism.
